Beware of These 5 Red Flags During Your Job Search

Between reading hundreds of job descriptions, researching companies, and doing countless interviews, it’s easy to get overwhelmed during your job search. Keep an eye out for these 5 red flags though and you will find your dream job in no time.

Company information is minimal or negative

In this day and age, every company has some sort of social media presence. Now they may not be on every social media platform, but you should be able to find at least one account. If you struggle to find one, research further. You want to research until you have enough information to evaluate the company properly.

Glassdoor is a valuable resource when you need more information about a potential employer. It provides you with salary data, reviews, and a greater sense of the company’s culture. If you still find minimal information or negative reviews, then proceed with caution!

There is no job description

This is a huge red flag. How are you supposed to know if you are qualified for the job if there’s no job description? The lack of a proper description could mean that the role will change after you get hired. What if you’re hired for a finance position but instead end up taking on marketing projects? Make sure the company can provide you with a clear description of the role before you meet with them.

The interviewer isn’t prepared

If you have to take the time to prepare questions and do research, then it’s normal to expect your interviewer to do the same right? Yes. If you feel that the hiring manager isn’t asking enough questions or that they are rushing through your interview, then something is definitely off. Their lack of preparation is not a good sign. A lack of interest could mean that they only care about filling the position and not about finding the right person for the job/company.

They’re rude

A first impression can make or break an interview. While you are selling yourself to the company, it’s important to remember that they are also selling themselves to you! This is a great time to see whether you can get along. For example, if the interviewer comes in 20 mins late, gives you a head nod, or insinuates that you’re not qualified half way through the the interview then it may not be a good fit. After all, if they treat you like this in the interview, then how are they going to treat you as an employee?

Interviews are stressful for everyone, including your interviewer. This is why it’s important to pay attention to your surroundings and see if they are simply running late due to a busy schedule or if they just won’t give you the time of day.

The company offers a very low salary

Know your worth. Do your research to see what other companies are offering for similar positions. You want to make sure you are fairly compensated for your work. If the company consistently dodges the salary discussion, then proceed with caution.

Searching for a job can be time-consuming and exhausting, but that doesn’t mean you should accept the first offer that comes your way. Be sure to asses every opportunity so that it aligns with your goals. Don’t forget to pay attention to these red flags that you may encounter throughout your job search.
